Workshop Objectives

The recent release of the Reference Model for Digital Libraries by the DELOS Network of Excellence on Digital Libraries represents a first step towards establishing a universally accepted unifyiing framework for digital libraries (DLs). In particular, the “DELOS Reference Model” identifies the basic concepts and relationships characterizing the area and allows for further additions, expansions, and specializations as the field evolves.

After JCDL2007 (click here for the First Workshop on Digital Libraries Foundations) and ECDL2007 (click here for the Second Workshop on Digital Libraries Foundations), this third edition of the Workshop on “Foundations of Digital Libraries” aims at moving from the theoretical definition of the model to its concrete exploitation in addressing interoperability between digital libraries.

Having this well-grounded and very broadly-reaching abstract tool at its disposal for the first time, it is expected that the DL community can study the issue of interoperability and other related complications in a systematic fashion, and make substantial progress. Whereas similar efforts in the past have invariably focused on interoperability of content and, occasionally, of functionality, the DELOS DL Reference Model demonstrates the need to deal with interoperability of all the other, equally important DL concepts as well, offering a firm ground for deriving comprehensive and novel methodologies and approaches towards the problem.

In particular, this Workshop will focus on how the Reference Model concepts allows for a more effective understanding of the problems related to interoperability in large federated DLs. To this aim, experts participating in prominent Digital Libraries projects will be invited to present the main problems of interoperability identified in their own project and the solutions applied. The presentations will be followed by discussion sessions where experiences and solutions will be compared. From these discussions between stakeholders it is expected that useful insights on the actions to be done in order to improve interoperability between large DLs will progressively emerge.
